Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth, support bridges, support dentures, and eliminate the need for removable partial dentures. They represent a good option for replacing one or more missing teeth for a patient with good overall dental health and bone structure.
A dental implant is attached only to the replacement tooth that it holds. This means that there is no need to have any natural tooth structure removed in order to fit the crown; the dental implant is held securely in place without the need for any additional support.
Because a dental implant is a permanent replacement that looks and feels exactly like your natural teeth, there is no extra maintenance or change in biting habits that are normally associated with partial dentures.
There is no danger of rejection as the materials used in dental implants are readily accepted by the human body. These include the titanium base which is fixed into the jaw bone. After the dental implant is attached, the titanium oxide on the surface of the dental implant will fuse with the bone over a period of 3-6 months in a process known as “osseointegration”. After this process is complete, a crown is then placed over the dental implant. As the implant is firmly affixed into the bone, the denture is held securely in place without affecting the bordering teeth.
Dental implants provide a secure and non-restrictive means of attaching your full dentures to your gums. Unlike other dentures which use adhesives to keep the dentures attached to your gums, the dentures on dental implant supports are held securely in place against the gums in such a way as to allow you to retain almost complete biting and chewing ability.
