Laser resurfacing is a new innovative procedure that reduces facial wrinkles, fine lines, scars, discoloration and other skin irregularities, leaving the patient with a rejuvenated, younger looking skin and enhanced appearance. This procedure has recently escalated in popularity as there is no bleeding and bruising involved unlike other alternative methods. The results are also much quicker.
Synonym
Lasabrasion, Laser peel or Laser vaporization.
About the Procedure
First, you will be placed under local anesthesia, but for treatment deep in the skin, perhaps, general anesthetic will be advised. Your doctor will aim his laser at the targeted area, and it will penetrate and remove the outer skin layers which have not been damaged. He or she will then be able to reform the new skin layers to look younger. Wrinkles around the eyes, mouth or forehead may be treated individually, or a full-face laserabrasion may be performed. Depending on the extent of your treatment, you may need two sessions.
Types and Options
Laser Types – CO2 Lasers
The CO2 laser is the highest intensity laser treatment now available. The surface of the skin appears tighter and smoother after the treatment as the laser uses heat to restrict the collagen bands found in the lower dermis. The CO2 laser can eliminate or diminish the appearance of most wrinkles, scars, warts and birthmarks.
Laser Types – Erbium Lasers
Erbium lasers can eradicate thinner layers of skin more than the more powerful, but less precise CO2 laser. Erbium lasers are often better for patients with dark skin because there is less risk of permanent changes to skin coloration. They are also better for patients with healthy skin who only want to treat minimal fine lines and wrinkles.
Fraxel® Laser Skin Resurfacing
The Fraxel® laser skin resurfacing treatment is different from the other treatments that use either an erbium or CO2 laser. As the Fraxel® laser procedure is non-invasive, there are few post-treatment side effects. There is hardly any skin tenderness or pain felt after the treatment and no downtime is required. However, this is not a single session treatment.
Length
The recovery time for CO2 laser treatment is approximately two weeks. For Erbium Laser, it is around one week, and for Fraxel Laser treatment, the recovery period is only a few days.
Benefits
This innovative new treatment can enhance the appearance of the skin in a variety of ways including:
• Eliminate fine lines and wrinkles
• Correct scars and skin irregularities
• Treat crow’s feet
• Reduce appearance of acne scars and discoloration
• Tighten skin
• Smooth out rough skin
• Treat chicken pox scars and moles
• Reverse signs of old-age.
Who is an ideal candidate?
An ideal candidate would have wrinkles and fine lines under the eyes and forehead or acne scars, sun-damaged skin, or lots more skin disfigurations. They would also have healthy quality skin and want to look younger.
Who is not an ideal candidate?
A candidate who would not be ideal would have brown or dark skin.
Recovery
Following the treatment, there may be some redness, swelling and itching which could last for a few days, but this is nothing to worry about. It will take about 5-7 days before the skin dries and peels. If a bandage was applied after the treatment, it may be replaced with a fresh one after a couple of days.
After about a week, your bandage will be removed, and a thin layer of ointment may be applied to your skin.
During the recovery period, it is advised to wear a specially selected sunscreen with a protection factor of more than 20. Your doctor may suggest other application as well as to apply and instruct you on how to wash and take care of your skin for better healing. There will be crusts on your face for a while, but do not pick at them.
Planning your surgery
Prior to treatment you will have to meet up with your doctor to discuss the operation, your desired results, the risks and alternative methods involved, and you will have to sign a consent form. If you are a smoker, your doctor may ask you to cut down or quit as that increases the risks of infection and slows the wounds from healing.
