About the Procedure
On your first visit to the dentist, he or she will contour your teeth. Next, they will apply acidic etching gel to the surface. This is to make sure the shape and size of the teeth are not in affected any way. A bite impression will be made and sent to the laboratory to be produced.
On your return to the dentist, you may be placed under slight anesthesia. A light will cure the cement before your dentist completes the treatment by polishing the veneers.
There are different types of tooth veneer procedures which mend discoloring of the teeth.
Composite Veneer Procedure:
These composite veneers are applied on a single trip to the dentist. The procedure consists of applying bond and enamel directly on to the tooth’s surface.
Porcelain Veneer Procedure:
These veneers are very thin pieces of porcelain and take two trips to the dentist to complete the procedure, the first time in an effort to get an impression to create the tooth.
Lumineer Porcelain Veneer Procedure:
Made of Cerinate porcelain, these are a new kind of porcelain veneer. They are contact lens-thin, roughly 0.2 mm thick. In most cases, little to no tooth reduction is needed, and anesthetics or numbing shots are not necessary.
Length
This kind of procedure normally needs at least two visits to the dentist. Traditional Porcelain Veneers typically last for 10 to 15 years. Composite Veneers last from 5 to 7years.
Benefits
Veneers are truly great for those wishing to have a new smile, one which enhances their appearance. They can also be used to align crowded or protruding teeth, and they are very difficult to stain.
Who is an ideal candidate?
An ideal candidate would desire a more pleasing smile to enhance their looks. Their teeth would be either too large, too small, oddly shaped, oddly sized, chipped, crooked or even have small holes through them.
Recovery
During recovery, it will take around 1 or 2 weeks before you actually get used to the veneers.
Planning your surgery
Before you begin this procedure, first decide how white you want your teeth to be. This decision is very important, so as to avoid fake or artificial looking teeth The goal of this procedure is to achieve optimum whiteness but still appear natural. You may also ponder your hair and eye and color.
Anesthesia
A local anesthetic may be used, but it is not very common.
Risks / Complications / Side effects
You may suffer from sensitivity due to hot or cold temperatures, but this will go away after a few weeks. Even though very little tooth is actually removed, there is the possibility of trauma in the tooth.
After your surgery
About one week after the placement of your veneers, you will return to your dentist for a treatment evaluation. This visit is extremely important because your dentist will evaluate the placement of the laminates and tissue response. Even though veneers are strongly cemented into place, they have been known to come loose and fall off. In the event of that happening, keep hold of your veneer and contact your dentist immediately.
Post operative care
To encourage longevity of the veneers, avoid staining foods, drinks, tobacco, chewing ice, nails or tough foods like nuts, grinding and clenching. If you have the tendency to grind your teeth while sleeping, your dentist can arrange a small mouth guard.
